Debut release by Shinkiro from the futuristic city of Osaka, Japan. We have great hopes for this fantastic CD, music could be the perfect soundtrack for films like Dark Water, Kairo or Cure... not so astonishing in our opinion for someone living so near the dark waters of the Yodos river. Dark ambiances with percussions and a few samples of smooth women voices. The sound has been once again remastered for the best pleasure by Andreas Resch of Minox Lay. The digipack also looks stunning and initial copies (500) of the CD comes with a bonus MCD with 4 reworked tracks by Hybryds.

~I have this album on the not so productive Athanor label for a few months now and I have played it several times. Nevertheless I could not bring myself to write a review about it sooner. Often that’s not a good sign, but in this case I find it simply hard to describe this intriguing debut release by Shinkiro adequately. In broad terms the music by this artist from Osaka, Japan can be described as ritualistic ambient.
The mysterious soundscapes consist of deep sound layers, subtle percussions and sparse (female) voices. It’s dark and dreamy at the same time. It could be a hallucitating soundtrack to a cult film situated at the bottom of the deepest sea. I’m reminded of the more abstract work of Die Form or the aquatic releases on Spectre. A slow composition like ‘Deep calls’ has something suffocating, like you’re desperate to get to the surface for air. ‘Into the darkness’ comes more to the forefront with prominent ritual percussion.
“Deep blue” is certainly recommended to lovers of demanding ambient music. As a special treat the first 500 copies of the album come with an extra mcd. This bonus contains four remixed tracks by one of the most interesting ritual acts around, the Belgian Hybryds. As you could expect the ritual aspects are even more dominant here, with a darker sound. Especially ‘Still alive’ has hypnotizing qualities.~

~Manche Labels zeichnen sich durch eine erstaunlich Verlässlichkeit aus. Das liegt nicht notwenidger daran, dass sie beständig ein bestimmtes Genres und damit einen bestimmten Markt bedienen, sondern vielmehr, dass sie bei stilistischer Varianz immer wieder Entdeckungen auf hohem Niveau herausbringen, deren Zusammenwirken ein größeres Bild hinterlässt. Das französische Label Athanor gehört zu diesen Insitutionen, die sich über Jahre einen sehr guten Ruf im experimentellen Underground erarbeitet haben. Von neuer Folkmusik bis hin zu atmosphärischen Ambientsoundtracks, von okkulter Ritualmusik bis zu martialischen Inustrialrhythmen kann man sicher immer neu überraschen lassen. Alte Bekannte (wie Ain Soph) zählen ebenso zu den Labelbands wie vergleichsweise Neuentdeckungen.
Zu letzteren zählt der Japaner Shinkiro aus Osaka, der mit "Deep Blue" sein Debüt veröffentlicht. Inspiriert von seiner futuristisch anmutenden Heimatstadt und den finsteren wassern des Yodo-Flusses konstruierte er abstrakte Klanglandschaften, die von minimalistischen Rhythmen, hallenden Metallklängen und sphärischen Drones durchzogen sind. Sinnliche japanische Frauenstimmen kommen aus dem Unbekannten und verschwinden wieder. Obwohl dieses Ambiente durchaus seine Geheimnisse birgt, wird die Stimmung nie wirklich beklemmend. Ihr eignet vielmehr eine Leichtigkeit und verspieltheit, die aus diesem Genre ungewöhnlich anmutet.
Das schön gestaltete Digipak arbeitet mit stark stilisierten Unterwasser-Bondage-Motiven (!, siehe oben). Diese submarine Assoziation erklärt zugleich das zeitlupenhafte, das sich im ersten Track faszinierend ausbreitet. Den ersten 500 CDs liegt noch eine Remix-Maxi bei, auf der die belgischen Hybryds vier Stücke umstrukturiert haben. Obwohl hier rituelle Strukturen dominieren, wurde die Handschrift von Shinkiro bewahrt. Wer 'wahre' Ambientmusik als Projektionsfläche verschlungener Gedankenbilder sucht, liegt bei Shinkiro genau richtig…~
